DURATION
Jan 2021 - May 2021
BACKGROUND
Lutron offers a wide selection of energy-saving dimmers and lighting control solutions. Their physical experience centers and showrooms are designed to showcase lighting and shading systems.
I lead user-centered research to understand how people experience showrooms, the barriers they encounter, and the potential of innovative services to overcome them.
THE CURRENT STATE
Lutron's current experience center provides good overview of Lutron’s products and their capabilities. It also allows the company to provide training for Lutron’s products.
However, the physicality of experience centers would limit users from accessing that experience.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Providing an interactive, virtual experience center will aid customers in visualizing the potential for Lutron home lighting systems, as well as give clarity to each of Lutron’s products.

THE SOLUTION
An integration in the Lutron app that utilizes AR to allow users to experience different products in their own home.
For just a little bit of time and for no cost, user can simulate the feeling of Lutron products in the comfort of their own home. While it’s not 100% accurate to real world lighting conditions, it’s enough to gain a sense and understanding of each different product.
the data that customers generate via their interaction with the app gives Lutron insight into the products people are interested in, as well as customer habits and preferences while they interact with the at-home experience center.
PERSONA

Meet Christina.
A working professional in Philadelphia.
Christina is in the market for a full-home redesign, including her lighting system. She is generally tech-savvy, and she wants
a lighting system that fits her lifestyle.
However, she is very busy and has difficulty understanding the differences and the requirements for each Lutron product line, what products they’re compatible with, and most importantly, what they can actually do for her home.

Christina browses the Amazon website for Lutron products that she might be
interested in and clicks on the Caseta Smart Home Dimmer Switch.
In the description section on the product page, she sees an option to ‘try’ out the product via an experience center in the app before purchasing.
Christina downloads the Lutron app and navigates to the experience center section. The app turns on Christina’s camera and she is able to see what her room would look like with the Caseta, a feature that is supported by AR technology.
Christina plays with the different functions of the switch, which allows her to see how the product might work in her living room by dimming or increasing the brightness of her lights.
A ‘learn more’ button on the interface that shows more product information, as well as the other products and home systems that are compatible with the Caseta Dimmer Switch.
She sees a ‘where to buy’ button that
gives her the option of going to an online retailer, or allows her to put in her zip code to find physical stores near her that sell the Caseta Smart Home Dimmer Switch.
Christina enjoys using the experience center and shares screenshots of her experience on her Instagram story with her family and friends, some of who reach out to her to learn more about the experience center.
